At Phoenix ESU, we create experiences that stay with our members for life. Open to young people aged 14–18, our programme is designed to challenge, inspire and empower.
We meet on Friday evenings during term time from 19:00–21:00. Subs are £22 per half term. In addition to our weekly meetings, we run a varied programme of camps, trips and adventurous activities throughout the year.
From action-packed evenings at the hut to ambitious adventures like visiting the National Space Centre, our Explorers get involved in everything from digital skills and communications to hiking, shooting, camping and bushcraft. Every activity is designed to help young people discover what they love, step outside their comfort zone, and build confidence, resilience, self-reliance and leadership — all part of developing true #SkillsForLife.
Our uniform is a sand coloured shirt with optional navy blue activity trousers. You will also earn the right to wear the Phoenix ESU Neckerchief by learning the Scout Promise and demonstrating your understanding of Scout Law.
Badges (and belts!)
Across your time at Explorers you will earn various awards as your skills develop; these are shown by badges sewn onto our uniforms. As well as our Activity Badges, Explorers have the opportunity to earn Top Awards, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Chief Scout’s Award (and for our most intrepid members the King’s Scout Award, though this is usually completed post-18) Young Leader’s Award Scheme (which also earns our members the right to wear the Young Leaders belt) and less formal awards such as the Yorkshire Challenge! Are YOU brave enough to camp in every month of the year?

Our leaders work hard to plan engaging sessions. Want to help? We’d love to hear from you!
Our Explorers guide the programme; our events change each year as the interests and passions of our young people develop over time. However, one thing you can guarantee is plenty of opportunities to go camping! Each summer Phoenix ESU attends one of three Jamborees in the UK (a giant camp with thousands of Scouts and Guides from around the world) with our fourth year attending an overseas camp with hundreds of other Scouts and Explorers from across Humberside Scout County.
