Howden Scouts

Scouts is aimed at 10.5-14 year old girls and boys. 1st Howden Scouts meet on Thursday evenings, 19.15-21.00. Weekly meetings are term-time only, and it costs £20 per half-term.

As well as those weekly meetings, we also have regular events. Some of these might be during our usual weekly sessions, like visiting the local area, and we often organise events outside of the meetings – from camps and walks to activities like ice skating.

We’ve put together some information below for you, if you’re thinking of joining.

Uniform

Scouts uniform is a green shirt, but we’d recommend giving the first few weeks a go before investing in a new one.

Once you’ve been in Scouts for a while, you’ll get invested. This means that you’ll be provided with a necker (purple and white, 1st Howden colours), a woggle (the colour will depend on the group you’re in), and you’ll make your promise.

Badges

You’ll work towards earning badges each week – some are quick to earn and others take a bit more effort. Sometimes we’ll ask you to work towards them at home too.

Badges are divided into core, challenge, activity, and staged badges, plus you get ones for special occasions too, like the Coronation. You can work towards their Chief Scout’s Gold badge throughout your time at Scouts.

Then there are camp blanket badges, which don’t go on your uniform but can be nice reminders of nights away and other achievements.

Don’t worry about where badges go on the uniform. When you start coming to Scouts, you will get a login for Online Scout Manager (OSM), which has a handy tailored image guide showing you exactly where to put the badges you’ve earned.

Events

The weekly programme is tailored to the group, so if there are badges we’re working towards, we’ll organise activities that will earn us those badges.

Scouts is a step up from Cubs when it comes to camps – you’ll find that they get longer and are sometimes further away – you might even get invited to an international camp.

You’ll get plenty of notice for events outside of the usual weekly sessions, and it’s up to you if you want to be involved. There is sometimes an additional cost involved with trips and events. Notifications will be sent through Online Scout Manager, and you just need to visit the portal to let us know whether you want to attend or not.

Here's what we got up to last year in Scouts.
